In the Native American culture, the cardinal symbolizes renewed vitality through recognizing self-importance.* It is also a year-round bird. We at Arrowhead Massage therapy have adopted the cardinal as our totem to symbolize our availability every day of the week, and our mission is to help you renew your vitality and recognize your self-importance.
WINTER
The days are shorter, the nights are longer, and we begin to notice a change in the habits and moods of people. During the winter months, the gloominess of "winter blues", "February blahs", "Holiday depression", or doldrums, is in the air. The severest cases of this type of depression is diagnosed as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Symptoms include sleeping more, tiredness, depression, and physical aches. Causes include genetic disposition, stress, and the decreased exposure to light. There are days when you go to work in the dark, and return in the dark. To combat these feelings, try to walk outside at some point in the daylight...maybe lunch. I know it's cold, but a short sprint could be invigorating
Massage Therapy is an excellent way to relieve those aches and pains and increase the "feel good" hormones of serotonin and dopamine, and to release your endorphins. It will assist you to get in tune with the season. A regular massage will help you enjoy a more comfortable, pleasurable winter.
Massage Therapy reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion, and increases endorphins, the body's natural pain-killers. When your Body is relaxed and fully functioning, your Mind can also take a break, allowing your Spirit to rise. Therapeutic Massage enhances medical treatment and helps people feel less anxious and stressed, relaxed yet more alert.
We all have stress, and some stress is necessary to be functional, productive citizens. The problem for most of us is that we are over-stressed, over-worked, sleep-deprived, and under-appreciated. Stress manifests in many forms. It can appear as a headache, insomnia, neck/shoulder pain, low back pain, irritability, ulcers, twitches, depression, anxiety, digestive irregularities, or a lowered immune system which makes you more susceptible to viral and bacterial attacks. According to Sandra McLanahan, MD, Buckingham, VA, "Massage Therapy is beneficial for almost all diseases. Eighty percent of disease is stress-related, and massage reduces stress."
Massage is to the human body what a tune-up is for a car. The obvious difference is that you can buy a different car but, like it or not, your body is yours to keep. This makes it even more important to provide your aching muscles with regular maintenance.
So, while you are walking in the sunlight, or grumbling about the dark, cold winter, consider the preventative and healing aspects of a regular massage. Hot stones on a cold day ... you will be amazed at the change in your body and attitude!
